Case Study
Printed Circuit Board used in various electronic appliances contains the following toxic substances;
i. Lead and cadmium (cause brain damage, cancer, etc.)
ii. Mercury (cause damages to brain and nerve system)
iii. Brominated flame retardant
iv. Poly Chlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)
v. Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC)
Refrigerator and air-conditioner contain CFC (Freon)gases, which has a high global warming potential and contributes to ozone depletion. Ozone depletion would result in an increase of UV radiation reaching the Earth’s surface, and of skin cancers.
Because e-waste is increasing in its amount and diversifying in its amount
E-waste is one of the fastest growing source of waste worldwide.
In Malaysia, due to the fact that household E-wastes are mostly ended up in the informal sector, there is no proper data captured by the Authority on actual quantity of household E-waste generation. But based on the studies conducted in the selected areas, the quantity of e-waste generated from households, commercial and institutions are estimated to reach 53 million pieces in 2020, which is 3.5 times higher than 1995.
